Richard Cox attended the Society of American Archivists Publications
Board meeting, in his capacity as Publications Editor, in Chicago, April
4-6, 2003.
Ellen Detlefsen delivered a speech, “Evidence-based Pediatrics: Roadmap
for Your Future,” on April 10, 2003 at a conference held at St. Christopher’s
Hospital for Children, Philadelphia, PA in celebration of National Library
Week.
Ellen Detlefsen published “Research Being Done Outside the L/IS Realm,”
Hypothesis: The Journal of the Research Section of MLS 17 (1): 9-10 (Spring
2003).
Karen Gracy and Jean Ann Croft have received funding in the amount of
$12,478 from the University of Pittsburgh Central Research Development
Fund's Small Grants Program to conduct a study, "Preservation Education
Needs for the Next Generation of Information Professionals." The investigators
will use the grant to conduct a survey of preservation education opportunities
in both library and information science graduate programs and non-profit
field service programs.
Arlene Taylor and Daniel Joudrey attended the DDC 22: International Knowledge
Organization System Workshop for Library Educators, May 8-9, 2003, at OCLC
in Dublin, Ohio. Professor Taylor made a presentation on teaching
Dewey Decimal Classification via the Web.
Student News:
Aisha White, Ph.D.Candidate, recently received a $500.00 award
from the University of Pittsburgh Women's Studies Program to continue her
dissertation research. The funds will go to expenses incurred in conducting
a study of women at the State Correctional Facility at Muncy, Pennsylvania.
The study, entitled: The Information Use Environment in a Women's Correctional
Facility: An Instrumental Case Study, aims to find ways information can
help imprisoned women and is modeled after scholar Robert Taylor's research
framework. The methods include document analysis and interviews of staff
and inmates at the facility. Ms. White hopes to complete her dissertation
work in the summer.
