Job Resource Information Readers of Bibliofile have always asked that we include more information about job possibilities. We, your faithful editors, want to keep our readers happy. Last September Bibliofile ran an article outlining on-line and print resources avaible to the job-hunting librarian. September was many months and two long semesters ago, so this month we are updating that article. As with the previous article, this feature will always be available on-line. So, as you continue your job hunt, be sure to investigate the many resources available within and outside of the library community. For starters... You might begin your career planning with subscribing to the MLIS
listserv, which is an excellent resource for job announcements. To
subscribe, check out the departmental webpage. Also, take advantage
of the job resources website maintained by DLIS at http://www.sis.pitt.edu/~lsdept/libjobs.htm.
As you get closer to graduation, you might also want to contact the university's Career Services via their website ( http://www.careers.pitt.edu ) or phone/email Steve Rakas, the LIS contact, at (412) 648-7130/ srakas@pitt.edu. Career Services will critique your resume and cover letters, conduct mock interviews, and provide many other valuable services. If you are short on time or applying at the last minutes, Steve Rakas has walk-in hours on Wednesday afternoons from 1:00-4:30. For more info, check out his website: http://www.careers.pitt.edu/advisors/stever/stevers.html. Also, don't forget the jobs posting board on the sixth floor, which
covers jobs in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, and West Virginia.
These postings are also listed in the job binders in the library on the
third floor. The job binders contain all job postings from around
the country received by DLIS. Ask the librarian on duty for the folders,
which are kept behind the circ desk. Finally, if you want to probe the minds of recent MLIS graduates,
come the Recent Graduate Roundtable. The roundtable, sponsored by SCALA,
will be held on Wednesday, April 16, at 4:00pm. Come and ask all those
job- and class-related questions that have wandered through your brain over
the last few months.
