Richard J. Cox published "Unfair Use: Advice to Unwitting Authors," in the
Journal of Scholarly Publishing 34 (October 2002): 31-42. The essay
describes his difficulties in getting permission to quote from Nicholson Baker's
Double Fold for his own book-length response, ruminating about fair use and
copyright.
The GUARDIAN of January 11, 2003 featured a long article on the writings
of Nicholson Baker. John O'Mahony's profile of Baker, "Particular Obsessions,"
described Baker's work, including his attack on the library community in DOUBLE
FOLD. As an example of the reaction to this book, Dr. Richard Cox was
quoted and his own book responding to Baker, VANDALS IN THE STACKS: A RESPONSE
TO NICHOLSON BAKER'S ASSAULT ON LIBRARIES, was mentioned.
Richard Cox's talk at the University of Maryland about the post 9-11 implications
for libraries, archives, and museums was the subject of a first page story
in OUTLOOK, The University of Maryland Faculty and Staff Weekly Newspaper,
on December 3rd.

Doreen Boyce (president of the Buhl Foundation and the person for
whom our endowed chair is named) is on the cover as one of the Foundation
Community selected as "Pittsburghers of the Year."
Donald W. King and Carol Tenopir (University of Tennessee) recently published
an article, “Reading Behavior and Electronic Journals,” Learned Publishing,
Vol. 15 No. 4. October 2002.
Donald W. King and Carol Hansen Montgomery (Drexel University, Dean of Libraries)
have an article published in D-Lib Magazine, “After Migration to an electronic
Journal Collection: Impact on faculty and doctoral students,” December 2002.
Donald W. King and Carol Hansen Montgomery are scheduled to make presentations
at the January ALISE Meeting: “A Real World Research Collaboration That is
Working: Case Study;” the April ACRL Meeting “An ‘All’ Journal Electronic
Journal Collection in a University Environment: Two Years Later;” and a plenary
session with Peter Boyce and Carol Tenopir at the June NASIG Meeting “How
Electronic Journals are Changing Patterns of Journal Use.”
Donald W. King is working with JSTOR to examine costs of university print
and electronic collections. In addition to JSTOR staff, Sarah Aerni
(DLIS student), Ann Okerson (Yale University), and Roger Schonfeld (Mellon
Foundation) are working on the project.
David Robins presented a paper at the American Society for Information Science
and Technology (ASIST) 2002 Annual Conference November 17-21 in Philadelphia,
PA. The paper, titled “The U.S. Library Program: Analysis of the Impact on
Staff in Louisiana Public Libraries,” also appears in the conference proceedings,
pages 350-358. Dr. Robins also organized and chaired a panel titled “User
Studies and Information Architecture.” This panel explored the theory and
practice in user-centered information architectures and specifically called
upon panelists to demonstrate how user studies informed system design.
David Robins had a paper accepted to the journal, Information Technology
and Libraries, titled “Analysis of Web-based Information Architecture in
a University Library: Navigating for Known Items.” The paper reports the
results of a survey of web site usability and a study conducted on subjects
to determine the effectiveness of University Library's web site's navigation
system. The paper appeared in the December issue (volume 20, issue 4).
And some alumni news:
Sylvia Hall-Ellis has accepted a tenure-track faculty position in
the University of Denver's Library & Information Science program. She
received her Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh and has taught for the
LIS programs at the University of Arizona, Emporia State University, Sam Houston
State University, and San Jose State University. Her official appointment
began in October. She has been teaching in Denver's LIS core and Library &
Information Resources and Technology concentration as an adjunct since summer
2000.
