Faculty Profile
Dear Readers:
Continuing with the faculty profile that we
began last month, this month Bibliofile presents Dr. Tomer.
Name: Christinger Tomer
Position: DLIS Chair and Associate Professor
Education: The College of Wooster, OH (undergraduate);
Case Western Reserve University (PhD, Library Science)
Research interests: information technology, economics
of information, digital publishing, digital libraries, scholarly communication
How he became interested in these subjects: While conducting
his graduate work at Case Western, he found that the faculty around him were
interested in scholarly communication. From his study in this area,
he became interested in the related technology and economics of how ideas
are exchanged.
Family: Dr. Tomer has a wife, Julie, who is a librarian
at the Mt. Lebanon Public Library. They have four children: Mary, Cait,
Willie, and Nora.
What he likes about Pittsburgh: The people are friendly,
and it is of a good size. While he did not grow up in this area, his
father's family has been in Pittsburgh for about 180 years. In fact,
at one point his family owned the ground where St. Paul's Cathedral now stands.
Hobbies: sports, reading, music, his kids (yes, that is
a hobby)
Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: Peanut Butter and Chocolate
Books he is currently reading: Leonardo's Laptop
by Ben Shneiderman and Paradise Alley by Kevin Baker
Favorite Book: The Memory of Old Jack by Wendell Barry

The Final Question: What else would he like students
to know? The Department of Library and Information Science is
commmitted to providing the richest and most fulfilling educational experience
possible. Dr. Tomer welcomes any suggestions about how he and the department
may improve the student experience at SIS.
Bibliofile thanks Dr. Tomer for agreeing to this interview.
It was a pleasure getting to know him better.
