Get Involved! (with thanks to Kim Whalen, whose previous article we adapted) With so many professional organizations to choose from, which do you join? The Student Chapter of the American Library Association (ALA) hopes you choose to join the over 6,000 member ALA. The low student rate of $25 enables you to receive ALA’s monthly American Libraries magazine at home, access to electronic lists, access to ALA’s placement center, full voting rights and committee privileges and access to member-only discounts at ALA conferences, publications and other services. Membership in ALA also entitles you to membership in the University of Pittsburgh’s Student Chapter of the American Library Association (SCALA). SCALA members benefit by attending meetings, events and joint activities with other local professional associations. Not only can you benefit from the educational and social aspects of the chapter, but you also can greatly benefit professionally. Participation in SCALA shows prospective employers your commitment to the field and citing participation in SCALA and ALA activities can enhance your resume. To become a member of ALA, visit
http://www.ala.org
. To become active in SCALA, visit

or email scala@sis.pitt.edu
. SCALA isn't the only student organization you can join, of course. The following is a list of student organizations taken from the SIS website. Visit the website for additional information about these organizations, including contacts, meeting dates, and activities.
