Did you know?
(We didn't either...)

Revised and Reprinted from the November 9, 2001 Issue.

Factoids that might come in handy your first weeks as a DLIS graduate student:
  • Janie Weaver, Assistant to the Department Chair, welcomes your DLIS questions and concerns. Email her at jweaver@mail.sis.pitt.edu or call her at (412) 624-7666.
  • The first day to register for Spring term is October 24. The course schedule should become available in early-October. The last day to register is December 6. Register early, register often.
  • Winter recess begins December 14.
  • Renovations on the 6th floor are scheduled to be completed by October 24. After the renovations are finished, the DLIS administrative staff will be moving into the new suite of offices located in front of the elevators. The entire moving process should be completed by mid-November. It is to be hoped.
  • Mailboxes for graduate students will be assigned September 27, following the add/drop period and the completed enrollment count. During the renovations, the mailboxes are located in the hallway across from the job boards and Room 650.
  • The 6th floor Local Job Postings bulletin boards are on the wall opposite Room 650 for the duration of the renovation.
  • There are graduate student lockers on the 4th and 6th floors. BYOL (bring your own lock).
  • DLIS field placement application forms are available online at http://www.sis.pitt.edu/~lsdept/intern.htm#fpforms .
  • The job binders located in the IS Library behind the circulation desk contain listings and advertisements for available LIS jobs throughout the country.  Keep in mind that some jobs that do not post electronically are in the  binders.
  • The IS Library offers individual assistance with research papers and projects.  Drop in to schedule a consultation.
  • LIS students can attend DLIS faculty meetings. Generally, the meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month. Rumors that they are to be held in a secure, undisclosed location are unfounded. Contact Janie Weaver at jweaver@mail.sis.pitt.edu or call her at (412) 624-7666, for dates, times, and locations.
  • The American Library Association's 2003 Annual Conference will be held in Toronto, ON from June 19 - 25, 2003. This year, it is a joint conference with the Canadian Library Association. Registration information will be available in the December issue of American Libraries magazine, and on the ALA website beginning December 1, 2002 (www.ala.org ).
  • Each semester SIS students can apply for funding to attend professional conferences. Visit the Professional Conference Guidelines webpage at http://www2.sis.pitt.edu/academics/information/conference.html for more information.
  • You can get a student membership to the ALA for $25 a year. Keep an eye on your mailboxes for the application.
  • There is a United States Postal Service office within the Mellon Institute (the building with the big columns, on the corner of Bellefield and Fifth Ave.).  Enter the side door facing Bellefield. Turn immediately to the right and got to the last door on the left. The post office is through that door, in the general shipping area.
